HAUNTED ARTWORK
Department 1

HORROR AT
HAUNTED MOON BAY

Until a moment ago these eight young friends were happily hangin' out. Now something has shattered their carefree camaraderie, riveting horrified attention on the threatening presence of the crumbling old mansion.

What has happened? Has an unearthly scream ripped the night? Is it a supernatural foreboding that has set their pulses pounding? A feeling of oppressive dread? Or is it something far more sinister?

Perched, vulture-like, atop its high bluff, the ancient house has always been there, it seems, staring out to sea with sightless eyes. No light ever flickers in its vacant windows, there's never a clue as to what lies within. But they've always suspected.... and feared!

No one they know has ever entered the house, perhaps owing to that local legend: a young man, on a dare, who on Halloween eve (oh, maybe thirty, forty years ago) who broke a window and ventured inside.

Nowadays, the house is just there. People in town don't like to talk about it. They shudder, imagining mildewed furniture, shredded wallpapers, oppressive silence, rendered all the more fearsome by creaking doors (Who's there?); skitterings in walls and ceilings (What was that?); a graveyard stench in its earth-floored basement (What's that in the shadows?); sudden drafts of frigid dampness, suggesting.... ?? (We're outta here!)

Now the mystery is yours to imagine. The terror is yours to sense. The image is yours to interpret. Explore, close up, the Horror at Haunted Moon Bay!

I'LL WAIT HERE

Dead leaves rustle and dance in the chill wind that blows through neglected yards, down at the end of the lane, where long-dead corn stalks rattle their bony Halloween threats from nearby fields. Who dares approach this old house with its odd lights and inky dark shadows? Not he! Didn't Mom say, "Don't knock where there's no porch light"? Ready to flee for home at first fright, he'll hang back, guarded (he hopes) by the rusting remnant of that skeletal fence, eyes wide, heart pounding, already knowing that the treat's not likely to be worth the trick.

"I'll Wait Here!" was scanned from an earlier spooky house painting, forgotten and only recently rediscovered in a cobwebbed corner of my hard drive. The original painting, sold some years ago, had been scanned and saved at the time, but the image had somehow slipped from my awareness, coming to light only in the course of some long overdue computer housecleaning!

This was a relatively small painting, and has been reproduced at about the size of the original. For that reason, it is available only in Medium Format size.

"I'll Wait Here!" has been carefully scanned from the original watercolor painting and digitally printed with light-fast inks on specially treated heavyweight watercolor paper. The print is inspected, the artist signs it, slips it into its protective clear plastic envelope, and includes with it a page of helpful framing hints.

The image measures 7-1/2" x 9-1/2", within a charcoal-over-white double mat, plus rigid foam-core backing, ready to drop into any readily available 14" x 11" frame.

GHOST HOUSE

Deep in the woods rests this once proud house, scarred by the years, shutters askew, illuminated by a shaft of moonlight that filters through the dense forest canopy, and an odd light in an upstairs window.

Let us, for a minute, absorb the moldering aura of the old house, witness as it has been - for more than a century - to ceaseless comings and goings, births, deaths, joy and sorrow, happiness and tragedy. Now it stands deserted, no longer loved by the living, lonely and forgotten. As the forest inexorably creeps in to reclaim its own, will the house and its ghosts mourn its melancholy, solitary end?

This painting employs a somewhat impressionist technique I've previously used, particular for my popular subject, The Homecoming. Several hidden figures lurk in the shadows.

Ghost House has been meticulously scanned from my original watercolor and digitally printed with lightfast inks on specially treated heavyweight watercolor paper. I personally inspect your print, sign it, slip it into its protective clear plastic envelope, and include with it a page of helpful framing hints.

ABANDONED NO MORE

It's a chill October evening, out there at the edge of town. As he walks "Killer" towards the usual late-evening turnaround point of the dog's nightly explorations, his thoughts turn to the old Gravely mansion. Once the grandest house in town, today it's an eyesore, long deserted, derelict in the extreme, and slowly falling to ruin. Condemned by the town, it is slated to be demolished - one of these days.

Enveloped in memories, he's scarcely aware of the great Victorial pile as it looms beside him in the moonlight. It's a shame, he thinks, how the grand old house has stood empty ever since.

Suddenly, he's frozen in his tracks by a very odd sound, emanating from the depths of the mansion. How would he later describe it? A shiver, unrelated to the evening's chill, flashes up his spine. He turns, now seeing light in the house where no lights ought to be!

Abandoned No More has been meticulously scanned from my original watercolor and digitally printed with lightfast inks on specially treated heavyweight watercolor paper. I personally inspect your print, sign it, slip it into its protective clear plastic envelope, and include with it a page of helpful framing hints.

This subject began its life as a mid-size painting, and thus is available in Medium Format size only.

TOO CLOSE TO DEATH TO DIE

I've decided to hike to the old mining town of Apparition, a hard trip that takes hours longer than planned. I'd heard that the only remaining building there was the undertaker's, and that he was also the town's barber and surgeon. It was said he could barber, butcher, or bury with equal enthusiasm.

As darkness envelops the canyon, a wreck of a building looms suddenly before me. I decide to spend the night in its shelter, but sleep evades me. It is past midnight when I hear stamping of hooves, snorting, and gentle neighs.

Peering through a shattered window, I see moonlight flooding the dead town, alive now with the unloving - spectral horses, ghostly miners raising no dust as they converge on the saloon.

Faint laughter, tinkling piano, the snap of cards, aces and eights, I feel myself being slowly drawn from the undertaker's world, into the night, into the heart of Apparition.

TILTED ANGEL

This painting was commissioned by a fan of The Haunted Studio who has graciously allowed me to offer prints of Tilted Angel for your pleasure as well.

There are no hidden ghosts, no lurking figures here. Just the silent swamp, the swirling mists, an old churchyard returning to the waters. John had a vision of how he wanted his painting to look and feel, down to the smallest detail, and he carefully conveyed that vision to me, right down to telling me to listen to Credence Clearwater Revival's "Born On The Bayou." This was a large (22" x 28") painting, and if there is sufficient interest, I might offer a full-size limited edition version at some time in the future.

STRANGE LIGHT

One day while contemplating my next haunted painting, I received an e-mail from a devoted fan. It read as follows:

"I snapped this picture about eight years ago. I was quite taken by the house which, when it was built, was probably quite elegant, but had been left to disintegrate. I talked to the local realtor about it. She said many people had offered to buy the house over the years and rescue it from its continuing destruction, but the old lady has refused to sell. She had suffered a great disappointment in love and could not bring herself to live in the house, nor let anyone else live in it either. Eight years ago, when I was making this inquiry, she was still alive and living in a nursing home, unwilling to sell the house, declaring that it would die along with her. The realtor said it was a pity because everything in it was original, and at that time it was over 100 years old."

The photo and its accompanying story caught my fancy, and I began to imagine the house as it might appear today, long abandoned, slowly declining, forlorn and neglected among neighboring houses with far more commonplace stories to tell. As I imagined the old lady, now undoubtedly deceased, and her tragic story, I began to imagine the sort of supernatural happenings that might well manifest themselves from time to time within the house, perhaps any night, but especially around Halloween. Matter of fact, precisely the sort of happenings our young trick-or-treaters have suddenly (and startlingly) observed.

What's even spookier though is that neither they - nor you, for that matter - have yet realized that there is a second shadowy figure watching them as well. The moment they do, I'll bet they'll be high-tailing it directly home!

33 RESTLESS SPIRITS AND
THE PHANTOM ORGANIST

To this very day, no one in his right mind dares venture by night to the abandoned old MacAbre mansion up on Cemetery Ridge, especially not when the moon is full. On such nights, it's claimed that strange music will be heard emanating from the ancient organ that still sags the rotting floorboards of the cobwebbed parlor, while ghostly shapes of restless spirits, some say, flicker behind the grimy windows and thump against the panes.

PHANTOM OF
BAYOU DES MORTES

In the winter of 1987, my wife and I were driving west from our then home in New England. To avoid icy weather, and because we had always wanted to see New Orleans, we chose a southern route, through the Carolinas, Mississippi and Louisiana. One afternoon, we decided to get off the interstate to see a little of the local countryside. Among the narrow roads lined with mossy trees and ramshackle villages we passed through, this old shack stood out for its forlorn, melancholy, haunted look. I liked the resulting photo, sure that it would someday result in a painting, but only recently did I pull it out with the intention of painting not just the scene, but the creepy way it made me feel. I called forth memories of the strange feeling that prompted me to photograph it, combining look with emotion to express, in paint, its strangely haunted aura.

As the painting neared completion, something really weird happened.

When I was rinsing a brush, perhaps a bit too vigorously, a drop splashed from my water pot and landed on the blackness of the cabin's open doorway. Fearing that it would dissolve the pigment, I quickly blotted it. But as I lifted the tissue away, I was startled at what was suddenly staring back at me from the blackness of the doorway!

In the gloom of that sad old shack, I could see a ghostly pale face with tousled hair and furious expression! Was it my imagination? You can barely see it in the above image. At any rate, I didn't dare remove or try to improve it. I merely lifted out the slightest suggestion of body and arms beneath that scary head, and left it (him?) there.

The "apparition" is clearly visible on the Large Format print, but is hardly visible on the Medium Format version.

THERE'S ALWAYS A VACANCY
AT HAUNTLEY HOUSE

They've been traveling this deserted road since he took a wrong turn some thirty miles back. It's very late, they're exhausted, undeniably lost, and getting just a bit cranky. Suddenly there are lights ahead. An inn! And look: There's a vacancy!

"I don't like the looks of this place," she says as he begins unloading their bags, "and neither does Barnaby!" He's annoyed now: "Would you rather sleep in the car?" There's a long silence. What will they decide? How will Barnaby handle this? Why is the inn illuminated with such a strange light? And are they being watched? Aaaaah, maybe it's just our imagination. (Maybe it isn't!) And what about the adjoining cemetery? I'll leave the rest of the story up to you.

JESSICA CONCLUDED THAT
THIS PLACE PROMISED MORE
TRICK THAN TREAT!

Two young trick-or-treaters brave the hill at the edge of town, pausing before the mysterious mansion that now looms grotesquely over them. Is it imagination, or is the house undulating weirdly in the evening moonlight? Strange lights flicker from windows, hints of ghostly figures beckon to them. Hollow noises emanate from the barred windows below, which glow bloody red in the last rays of sunset. Her brother wants to ring the doorbell, but Jessica decides she's not getting any closer!

Good thinking, Jessica!

THIRTEEN SPOOKS
MAYBE MORE

I offer for your consideration this spooky old Victorian mansion in the moonlight. But wait! What's that?! Is there someone hiding in the shadows: Someone - or something - peering from a darkened window? A half-seen form lurking in the bushes?

My painting bears this title because I have hidden a host of ghosts in it. I'll let you in on a secret: There are way more than thirteen! Some determined ghost hunters have found more than twenty, and I know for a fact that there are several they still haven't spotted. (On the other hand, some people find more spooks than I included, and that's REALLY spooky!)

LAST LAUGH

I'm unable to tell you exactly how this very spooky painting came to me, or came to be. It was lurking in the shadier recesses of my mind for several months before I finally began work on it. The painting, when I finally finished it, was rather a surprise to me. Had I gone too far? What it too scary? I've left that question (and others) to be answered by you, who may be seeing it for the first time.

What's going on here? Who are these characters? What is the meaning of that strange apparition at bottom right? And what does the title tell you? I have my own personal interpretation but I don't want to influence yours. There are many spirits hidden in and lurking around the graveyard, the hearse, and my spooky old house. It will take you quite a while to find them all. If you can!

A few people have asked me if I could create a version of Last Laugh without the inset in the bottom right corner. To accommodate them, I created a second version with the inset digitally removed (above). If you prefer this version, please specify "OMIT INSET" when ordering. Unless otherwise specified, the original version (shown at top) will be sent.

THE PUMPKIN
SELLER'S HALLOWEEN

Have you ever wondered what pumpkin sellers do with all those unsold pumpkins as night falls on Halloween eve? Well, so did I, and that's precisely how this painting came to be.

It's Halloween night, and the last customers have purchased their pumpkins from the family's farm stand. Just a few are left unsold, so dad loads them in the back of the old pickup truck and hauls them home, where the kids help scoop them out. Then, one by one, mom and dad carve them, insert short fat candles, and display them in windows, along the porch, and everywhere else around the house.

The trick-or-treaters will be arriving soon, loot bags at the ready, and everyone in the family is hard at work preparing to provide a little shiver or two to spice up the evening. They've been doing this since their kids were old enough to enjoy it, and by now it's become the family tradition they look forward to all year.

At last, they'll all stand back to admire their handiwork. Throughout the evening, costumed kids and their protective parents will be coming by to admire them too, and to enjoy something else they've come to expect: fresh baked cookies and apple cider.

JUDGMENT BEFORE
THE DARK COURT

Come to where your fears play hardball with your fantasies, where ancient history morphs mysteriously into unknowable future where might-have-been merges menacingly with might-yet-happen.where the hereafter bumps softly, softly, against your carefully crafted reality, where afterlife meets - dare we think it? - after death??

Welcome to The Dark Court where, whoever "they" are, they're very much at home, and they demand your attention. Have no illusions: they're examining you as carefully as you are examining them (and they might not entirely approve of what they see!). Wait a moment! Is that the book of your life they are viewing with great interest?

There are mysteries waiting to be discovered here, in the chambers of The Dark Court, moldering books to be opened and read, visual puzzles to be solved. You may never unearth them all, nor divine all of their hidden meanings, but they will forever introggue your eye, entice your mind, beckon you into the secret world of The Dark Court.

Judgment Before The Dark Court is my most complex painting to date, both in concept and execution. It occupied my thoughts - and my brush - for many months. As the painting developed, strange and wondrous creatures inhabited its corners and crept from its crannies.

Take your time. Look around. I've buried a host of secrets in this painting, and you will spend many hours searching out the many subtle meanings in its symbolism.

Of the books on the shelves, over fifty have titles - real, imaginary, fearsome, funny, fantastic, funereal, far-fetched - nearly all of them suggested by Friends of the Haunted Studio. All are entirely readable in the Large Format size. If you have a good magnifying glass, they're even readable in the Medium Format size.

Please note that the image above is shown with a black border. This is not part of the print image. I suggest that for the very best look, a single charcoal-black mat be used when framing the Large Format print, leaving the background white of the print exposed.

SUDDEN CHILL ON ELM STREET

Where did all the other kids go?

It's gotten very quiet here on Elm Street, out at the edge of town. And now there's this creepy old Victorian house scowling down on them from atop its hill. Bare branches chatter against each other in the quickening breeze. Our fearless leader is getting a creepy feeling that says "Don't go there!". Then all of them suddenly feel a bit chilled, when all at once his wizard's hat -- the one his mom so carefully made for him -- flies from his head and skitters across the grass, directly towards that forbidding old house....the one whose doorbell they were just deciding whether or not to ring.

Was that sudden breeze the culprit? Or has the house become hungry for another visitor?

This subject began its life as a mid-size painting, and is available only in a Medium Format size.

THE HOMECOMING

She is to meet her future husband at the alter in the old church. There's a terrible storm that night, making her lose control of her car and crash into the huge tree at the bottom of the hill. Noting that she's not far from the church, and that her fiance' is already there, awaiting her arrival, she decides to walk the rest of the way, taking a shortcut through the dark, creepy woods. As she comes closer, she hears the church tower clock strike. She becomes more restless, determined to get there on time....not realizing that she's already dead."

Theresa L's is just one of the many interpretations of this painting that I received when I asked Friends of The Haunted Studio to help me name it, and to suggest the back story. I couldn't have come up with a better one myself. All I can say is that it gives me the creeps!

THE MATTER IS
UNDER DISCUSSION

This undeniably spooky, yet somewhat whimsical watercolor painting has become one of The Haunted Studio's most popular subjects.

It's Halloween, of course, and the neighborhood kids are excitedly beginning their trick-or-treating. They're eagerly approaching the big old house at the top of the hill. All, that is, except the littlest one, there in the purple coat. She's definitely not ready for this! Her brother, though, is only afraid he'll miss out on all the goodies! Can you imagine the dialogue?

The title came to me one day, while watching a negotiator, reporting to the press about an ongoing dispute that everyone knew had reached explosive proportions, placidly reporting that "the matter is under discussion." How diplomatic! I just had to paint this scene to fit the title.

The house, by the way, really exists, and it stands at the top of a hill way out near the eastern end of Long Island, New York. I've imagined the scene, of course, and placed my eager (and not-so-eager) trick-or-treaters in the story. The nature of their discussion I'll leave to you.

SWEETS FOR THE SWEET

Neither neglected country lanes nor decaying suburban streets are the only places to find scary old ghost houses. Not at all! Walk the mean streets of any American city or town at twilight....or better still, during the lonely reaches of the night. Here abandoned buildings stare through shattered windows, silently scream out of twisted doors, hear witness to the crime of urban blight. Pause, if you dare, at houses that even the street-wise avoid....especially in the hours around midnight....unwanted relics that stand....or die....perhaps even briefly reappear?

I offer you this old townhouse, for example: Was it standing there yesterday? Will it be there tomorrow? These two youngsters aren't sure. They're poised on the knife-edge of fear. Accept the treat? Turn and run?

THE WELCOMING COMMITTEE

This is the perfect complement to "Thirteen Spooks, Maybe More." The painting was created for the "planchette" of Thirteen Spooks Spirit (Ouija) board, my joint venture with the brothers Johnson.

We're a little further from the house in this painting, where three rather lit-up Jack-'O-Lanterns cynically evaluate the costumes and makeup of trick-or-treaters passing by. In the distance, some other manifestations of the night are evident.

This subject has been scanned from a smaller painting, and thus is available in Medium Format size only.

THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL

A ramshackle old clapboard Victorian sags in the moonlight, shutters askew, gazing down on us from atop its unkempt hill. What's with that crypt half buried at center left? And what's going on in the attic? The neighborhood children stay away from the old house, especially at night when the wind creaks through the bones of the ancient oak tree and moans around the yawning crypt. And yet, there seems to be someone.... something?....in the residence at The House On Haunted Hill.

The print was made from a relatively small painting, and has been reproduced at about the size of the original. For that reason, it is available only in Medium Format size.

MIDNIGHT IN THE TREEHOUSE
OF GOOD AND EVIL

Is this a bit of a departure from my favorite haunted house motif? Well, not realy. It's certainly a house....and it definitely seems to be haunted! And how it seems to be haunted!

Our two youthful residents had been spending an afternoon in their rustic old treehouse, a pleasure they had long enjoyed, though up until now, only during daylight hours. But this time, as dusk fell, they must have dozed off in the cool, quiet evening. Now, strange sounds have awakened them to all sorts of spooky goings on. Is this really happening? Or is it all nothing more than a scary dream?

Should they not have eaten all that snack stuff they brought along? Has indigestion conspired with indiscretion? I don't know how you feel about it, but for my part, I certainly hope that's not really what's happening there! I expect they'll be hollerin' for Dad at any moment now.

In the meantime, our two trembling treehouse dwellers will be hard pressed to spot all the spooky spirits surrounding them! Can you?

NINE SPOOKS

It's Halloween, of course, and the neighborhood kids are making the rounds. They had better be careful, however, because there are some very spooky characters lurking in the shadows! You will have fun trying to find them all. You can start with the three who are walking up the path, and a couple more are pretty each to find. But can you unearth the rest?

Nine Spooks was actually the first of my current series of spooky house paintings. The original is owned by my good friend and well-known Western artist Joni Falk, who has graciously allowed me to reproduce it for your pleasure. It is a relatively small painting, and has been reproduced at precisely the ize of the original. For that reason, it is available only in Medium Format size.

HALLOWEEN NOCTURNE

This is the Jack 'O Lantern I remember "Pop" carving for me when I was a kid, and which I, in turn, carved for our kids when they were small. Mmmmm! I can still smell the aroma of singed pumpkin. More than simply a Halloween painting, to me it's an evocation of the pleasures of the late autumn season, when the leaves have fallen, and one can lose a happy half hour contemplating the myriad colors on a dried ear of Indian corn....or revel in the incomparable aroma of a cup of steaming hot apple cider on a chilly night. Say, come to think of it, those are a lot of things I love about Halloween, too!

This subject began its life as a mid-size painting, and because enlarging a painting coarsens its details and textures, it is available only in Medium Format size.

DOES ANYONE STILL LIVE
UP AT DEAD MAN'S POINT?

A late autumn storm lashes the coast, and as night falls, a ghostly light flickers past the windows of the moldering mansion on Dead Man's Point. Now here....now gone. Wasn't the place abandoned years ago when....what was it that heppened there? I thik it was in the papers. What secrets does the old house hold?

This subject began its life as a rather small painting, and has been reproduced a bit smaller than the original. For that reason, it is available only in Medium Format size.

SECOND THOUGHTS HALLOWEEN

It's getting late, and chilly too, and this was to be their last trick-or-treat stop. But someone is having second thoughts about this stop. What's going through the mind of that young goblin out there on the sidewalk?

"I don't like the looks of this place one bit!" "This is the spookiest house in town." "Is that someone watching me from the window?" "Maybe I'll just skip this one and head for home." Probably good advice! The streets are empty, and neither the skies nor that house look any too friendly.

FROM THE SHADOWS AT NEVERMORE POINT

A dreamy, surreal quality pervades this melancholy painting. I realized, after completing it, that it is laden with symbolism, much of which I am at a loss to verbalize. Have you noticed the onlookers in the shadows of the portico?

"Like all men upon first encountering her leaning into the ocean wind on the rotting veranda of the long-abandoned McGill mansion, he is struck speechless by her haunting face....her gypsy-wild ebony tresses....her piercing dark eyes that mutely beseech, 'Are you my lost love? Are you the one?'"

"He knows, this windswept October night at Nevermore Point, that he has fallen under the spell of the fabled Sarah McGill, who (as legend has it) awaits the return of her lover, long ago drowned in a storm at sea."

"Having already pledged his love, he now offers her his life, never suspecting that in doing so, he will soon take his place as the thirteenth suitor to gaze at his love longingly, eternally, from the shadows at Nevermore Point."

THE INVISIBLE MAN
WILL NOT BE SEEN TONIGHT

The crumbling old Bijou theater, long noted for showing classic midnight horror flicks, is finally closing. Did you see it? It was in all the papers! Having had a pang of nostalgia when he read about it, Dad has decided to take the kids to see the Bijou's very last picture show, hoping to give them an experience they will long remember.

Little does he know! As they come down the block, Dad's attention is focused on the marquee. He's puzzled: The old Claude Raines film he had promised the kids has been pulled. Nevertheless, he's nowhere near as shocked as his kids, who are checking out the box-office line.

It seems that several of the former denizens of the Bijou -- faces we'll all recognize -- have waxed nostalgic, and have also decided to bid the beloved old theater farewell!

PHANTOMS

Why am I so fascinated by old graveyards? Is it because they evoke the souls that lived before us, whose earthly remains quietly moulder beneath? And what of their spiritual beings? Do we feel their presence around us in these earthly surroundings?

It is the artist's privilege to imagine the unimaginable, to visualize the unseen, to give form to our hopes, our beliefs, and sometimes our fears.

The phantoms in this scene arrived as I painted it, and crowded in by the dozen until the painting was filled to overflowing. You can certainly see some of them in the image above. Many more await your discovery.

And what shall we make of that solitary pot of brightly colored flowers?

This painting employs the somewhat impressionistic technique I've used previously, particularly for my popular subjects, The Homecoming, and Ghost House.

THE DAUGHTERS OF
GHOSTWOOD PLANTATION

Ghostwood Plantation has been on my mind for a long time now. The classic plantation houses of the Old South have always attracted me, as tangible ghosts of a long dead era. Many of them still stand, of course, and some are still occupied by the living. Others are haunted by their histories, their tragic destinies, and their lonely and neglected existence....not to mention the spirits of that bygone era.

"Few living souls dare tempt the spirits of Ghostwood Plantation, where ancient oaks stand guard over its once-proud manor house. On nights when the shrouded moon floats low and full, a vagrant breeze carries perfume of earth and damp leaves, with just a hint of magnolia, whispering forgotten secrets through swaying curtains of Spanish moss."

"In high-ceilinged chambers and moldering shacks that once knew pride, misery, passion, pain, the moon spills silent silver through gaping windows, upon memory-strewn floors, and only the ghostly daughters of Ghostwood Plantation remain to recount their silent stories in the indigo shadows."

"Hush! Wait! Is that merely the mournful call of a distant loon?"

To capture the spectral presence of Ghostwood Plantation, I have utilized the impressionistic technique you will often find in my paintings, most recently my very popular subject, Phantoms.

The Daughters of Ghostwood Plantation has been meticulously scanned from my finished watercolor and digitally printed with lightfast inks on specially treated heavyweight watercolor paper. I DREAM THE MIDNIGHT MIDWAY

The clack, clack, clack of cogs shatters the silence of the long deserted Thunderbolt Amusement Park, as a coaster car lurches protestingly upward along rusted tracks. With a sizzle of frying insulation, a scattering of lightbulbs slowly flickers to life, casting a pallid glow over the wreckage-strewn midway. Suddenly, from an unseen loudspeaker, recorded circus music wavers towards full pitch, then locks maddeningly into a repeating groove.

"What's happening?" you wonder. Long silent "Laffing Sal" jerks into motion in the suddenly chilly air, her cackling a fingernail-on-slate counterpoint to the manic sounds that assault your ears. You look wide-eyed around you. Were those figures at the freak show moving just a moment ago? Are the cars of the Horrorama Dark Ride starting to move as well? And whose bony arms are waving above their heads as the coaster nears its first big drop? Are you in the grip of some bizarre nightmare? And if you are (you wonder, frozen in your tracks), how can you awaken....NOW!

THE LAST WITNESS

A melancholy night beneath a rising moon.... a forgotten bayou where nothing remains save a scattering of partially submerged headstones slowly sinking beneath gradually rising waters....last remnants, perhaps, of the burying ground for members of the old church nearby....its gravesites forgotten, unvisited, unremembered by generations that came, lived their span, then went....their ebbing existence known here only to....the last witness.

ENDURING MYSTERIES OF
THE McPIKE MANSION

Fully a year ago, the artist received an eMail from a FOTHS (aka, Friend Of The Haunted Studio) telling him about a house in Alton, Illinois, reputed to be the most haunted place in the city. Accompanying the note were a half dozen snapshots my correspondent had taken, showing a hulking red brick mansion, apparently under restoration, though in a terrible state of disrepair. It was the McPike Mansion, which (unbeknownst to the artist) has a powerful reputation for supernatural manifestations. Naturally, he was fascinated!

A quick Google search uncovered a wealth of information that included the names of the couple who are undertaking this ambitious restoration, as well
as the URL of mansion's own website. (We invite you to visit the website at www.McPikeMansion.com/paranormal.html to see a few more pictures of the house, a retelling of its history, and some really spooky accounts of people's experiences while visiting there.

The artist sent off a letter expressing his interest in creating a painting of the house, and soon received an enthusiastic reply from (and a subsequent visit to The Haunted Studio by) the Luedke family. Sharon Luedke provided a wealth of historical information, pictures, and hair-raising stories about the Mansion itself.

Secrets Of The McPike Mansion has been in the works for nearly a year. Research accounted for much of that time, as the artist wanted to pay particular attention to depicting the the mansion as it might have looked in its prime.

THE HAUNTING OF BLUE HOUSE

Last night, an evening hiker, setting out for a walk along State Road, heard an odd noise that seemed to come from the old dilapidated Victorian mansion (which everyone in town refers to as "The Blue House"). He looked back to see a wavering light in the tower window. He gazed, mouth agape, a shiver of apprehension fluttering in his chest, an icy sensation lifting the hairs on his neck. Then, accelerating his pace, he quickly returned home via a different route.

The Blue House, in its day, was just about the grandest mansion in town, with its high ceilings, dark oak-paneled chambers, and its commanding view of the valley. Built around 1897 by the local lumber baron, the house had been handed down and passed through several owners since then.

But Blue House has stood empty, as old timers frequently recall, since that October night in 1937, when someone broke in, apparently bent on robbery. Neighbors heard shots and screams. The police were summoned, but by the time they arrived, the house again stood silent: blood-spattered, ransacked, and empty! Its occupants -- an entire family of six -- had vanished as if into thin air. No trace of any of them was ever found.

Naturally, no one wanted to move into the place, so it stood empty for the longest time. Furniture was stolen, kids threw stones through windows, a mysterious fire destroyed the old barn out back, and time and weather continued to wear away at the once-grand mansion.

What people remember most clearly, however, was Halloween night, 1953, when a group of partying highschoolers dared that new kid to stay all night -- alone -- within the walls of Blue House. The poor kid didn't want to, but they persisted and he finally gave in. The following morning his tormentors looked on wide-eyed as he emerged unsteadily from the house. His hair had turned completely white and he stared out with strange, distant gaze! No one ever got him to speak a word of his experience, and the family soon moved out of state.

As far as I know, he was the last living person to venture past the gaping doorway to Blue House! Since then, parents warn their children, "You be sure to stay clear of Blue House!" Or they might whisper, between bridge hands at the club or over drinks at the Inn, "I was driving down State Road last night and those sounds are coming again from Blue House." Or, "Did you hear what happened to so-and-so when she went up to Blue House?" And today the hiker is telling everyone who will listen about that light!

THE DEVIL'S CASTLE

"This is as close as I lead you. No further. She is there, always by the lighted window. I beg you, turn from here. This is folly. This castle, this land, is a lair of abomination. It grew darker still; perpetual twilight. The sun abandoned this forest long ago. "She is my love, my forever. Our love is..."

A freezing blast of wind extinguished his soliloquy as quickly as it did the lantern. She was aware. "Are you without sense?! Love does not exist here, nor mercy! She is not human, nor even beast, nor fiend. She is much worse. A specter, wraith; a shape-shifter. An evil that keeps this forest in darkness, the sky crimson, no matter the hour. A horror that turns holy men into tortured phantoms and minions. As it will you!"

"SILENCE! UNTRUE!" "No, sir! She wanted this dominion, this castle, and knew death was her only passageway here. She gladly chose death over your love! Turn back and forg...." "Forget?! I'm in Hell without her!" "IN HELL? FOOL! YOU STAND AT ITS GATES!!"

The lovelorn man re-lit his lantern and shuffled forward, mumbling of the reunion he had repeated in his mind for years. "She will smile, a becoming smile, and we will embrace. We will leave this place. And have children...." She watched the forest consume the lost soul, and began whispering a prayer for the dying. She stopped short. "Death? Alas, would be merciful if only that were his fate."

THE BONFIRE

For as long as Halloween had been observed, one of the most popular events was a great bonfire, at which all manner of stuff would be gleefully tossed onto a blaze set out in the middle of a road, or in a vacant lot, while costumed onlookers cheered, hooted and danced around while flinging into it empty crates, broken furniture, and other burnable booty they'd been hoarding for weeks beforehand.

Even though the Halloween bonfire seems to have faded from tradition (hazardous at best, thus a not-unwelcome passing), an artist is allowed to wax nostalgic for something he's never directly experienced.

The Bonfire has been meticulously scanned from my original watercolor and digitally printed with fade-resistant inks on specially treated heavyweight watercolor paper. THE WATCHERS

This painting began as a commission for Robert McG, who very kindly allowed me to offer prints of it to Friends Of The Haunted Studio. Like Tilted Angel, which was based upon an image in my client's mind, this work began with a set of photos Robert had taken, years ago, of a house whose unique character had impressed him. He asked me to place it, not in its original suburban setting, but on the edge of a cliff, in a night-time thunderstorm, with only its illuminated tower windows silhouetting the lone figure and a cat....watching. But not watching alone.

The result was this full-sheet watercolor painting, which, when it arrived at his home, elicited the sort of enthusiastic comments I so greatly enjoy receiving. He especially loves the ghostly figures that peer out of windows and from behind shrubbery, though you may not be able to see them in this view. Separately, though simultaneously, we titled this painting "The Watchers."

The Watchers has been meticulously scanned from the original watercolor painting and is digitally printed with fade-resistant inks on specially treated heavyweight watercolor paper. The print is personally inspect, the artist then signs it, slips it into its protective clear plastic envelope, and includes with it a page of helpful framing hints.

THINGS THAT GO BUMP
IN THE BASEMENT

You first walked down the staircase with walls on both sides of you so you couldn't see any of the basement till you reached the bottom. At the bottom of the staircase was a wall and you could either go left or right. To the right was a rec. room and the laundry room. Now to the left is the room I want in the painting. The room had a old cement floor, old wood panel walls and ceiling, and it had a door in the far left corner. There was a old cabinet record player, old pullout couch, creepy painting lying in the corner and spider webs and boxes of junk everywhere. Now i used to have a dream when I was a child about the basement and that is what I want the painting to show: I walk down the stairs and look into that room at the door, and the door would open, and eyes would peer out at me. I was thinking to show the stairway well lit, and that room dark and creepy with the door open a crack with eyes peering out, and whatever else you can add.

Things That Go Bump In The Basement has been meticulously scanned from my original watercolor and digitally printed with light-fast inks on specially treated heavyweight watercolor paper. I personally inspect your print, sign it, slip it into its protective clear plastic envelope, and include with it a page of helpful framing hints.

PRINTS:

I just wanted to let you know that I have received the three prints and I loved them. They looked great online, but are so much more impressive in person. I can't wait to frame them and put them out for Halloween. Thanks so much. --HK

WOW! Your fantastic prints arrived today and are gorgeous!!! Thank you so much and didn't you do something extra and include mats? You devil you!!! That is most appreciated! What a guy! Thanks, Lew! I love them and your packing was perfect! I have left a fantastic rating on eBay for you! -- DS

I received my printes in yesterday's mail and I am really thrilled with them. Thank you for sharing your talent with the likes of me who can not draw a straight line! Your work takes me back to my younger days and I can actually feel the fun of Halloween. I am a Halloween "purist." For me it is about witches, bats, ghosts, black cats, pumpkins, haunted houses and full moons. Not Dracula, not Frankenstein and certainly not all the blood and gore that seems to show up on Halloween nowadays. So keep up the true traditions of Halloween and thanks again. I'm sure I'll be back for more!! -- Lynn

I received the print and I love it! I will definitely be ordering more from you. -- KD

I wanted to let you know I received the 3 prints in the mail today....they are wonderful!!! I am looking forward to getting the mug and T-shirt. -- RT

I received my order this weekend and we are thrilled to death. The pictures are wonderful!!! Somewhere along the way my sister and I started collecting Haunted Houses and your paintings are perfect. Thanks for the "bonus"! I'm sure we'll be doing business with you again real soon. -- LS

GOT IT!!! Looks fantastic. Thanks for the bonus, that was one of the paintings I had planned on ordering a large print of. It's my favorite. I sure am glad I found your site. If you ever get in the Chicago area, e-mail me I would like to meet you. -- GH

I received the print today, and it is even better in person than in the photos. I will definitely be buying more of your artwork. Thank you so much. -- HK

I just received my print of The Pumpkin Seller's Halloween and I am thoroughly delighted. I was somewhat apprehensive of what the quality might have been but I am more than pleased after seeing the print. Your shipping and packaging was great and I will be a collector of your art from now on. -- JK

I just received my order from you and want to say how much I love the pictures! I will continue to check your website for new additions. -- K.J.

The print arrived today and I love it. It will fit in my house perfectly. I'm intrigued by the white light on the third floor. I'm sure I'll be back for more!
Thank you. -- L.S.

Your art is truly superb and I am VERY hard to please! -- B.W.

My print of The Homecoming arrived, and it is even more eerie in person.
I love it! :) -- M.C.

I received my prints this week and have to tell you how much I love them. As I took them out of the box I saw first hand the wonderful detail and emotions evoked in these paintings. But when I unwrapped "The House on Haunted Hill" I actually got goose pimples!! It's almost like standing in front of this house on a chilly autumn evening. Thanks so much. -- P.C.

Just a note to let you know that "The Homecoming" was delivered to me a day before I actually needed it for my sister's gift -- and it is ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!! It is far more attractive even than it looks on the web -- the place that framed it for me fell in love with it also -- and I have given them your website to browse. Thanks once again! I think I'm going to order another for myself now. -- T.G.

I'm just wild about your paintings and hope to one day purchase an original!!! I'm saving my pennies. Your work is sensational and brings back such wonderful memories of when my brother and sisters and I would go trick-or-treating on Halloween night. We would look forward to that holiday as much as Christmas! Now, at the ripe age of 42, I still look forward to dressing up with my husband and scaring little children when they come to our door on Halloween night. They love seeing grown ups getting into the act!! Wishing you all the best! You have amazing talent! -- G.J.

This is unbelievable!!! It is absolutely fantastic!!! Don't change a thing. I can't believe it turned out this nice. -- GH

ABOUT THE ARTIST

A FEW WORDS, MAYBE MORE, FROM "THE PAINTER OF DARK" --
LEWIS BARRETT LEHRMAN

I'm lewis Barret Lehrman, veteran graphic artist and illustrator, professional watercolorist, teacher of watercolor and artistic journaling at the Scottsdale (AZ) Artists' School and elsewhere, and author of six books on art for artists. For three years, I served as founding American Editor for International Artist Magazine. These days, however, you'll find me in my studio most of the time, working on new subjects.

My career as a fine artist began back in 1984 following over twenty-five years in graphic design and illustration, and I've been painting and writing pretty much full time ever since. This unique artwork has been my baby for the last five years or so, and I've built its spooky collection from just a few paintings and prints, to its present -- and still growing -- gallery of subjects. Will I ever run out of ideas? Never! I've got so many backed up in my head and CLAMORING to get out, I'll never get to do them all!

How did I become interested in painting the haunted world? I trace it back to the summer of 1944, the year I turned eleven! That was when my aunt and uncle invited me to spend a month with them on a mid-western farm. I was a New York city kid, a budding artist even then, and to say I was excited at making the trip -- by myself! -- on an overnight Pullman sleeper train to Battle Creek Michigan, would be understating my feelings by quite a bit. Sleepless with excitement, I spent that night, nose pressed to the window, gazing out at moonlit famlands, lonely houses lit by solitary lights, as we rolled past in the darkness. They're images I remember to this day, so it was only natural that I would be drawn to painting the night. From painting the night it was a short hop to Halloween.

Through the mid 1980's and into the early 1990's, my wife and I owned an art gallery which featured my work as well as that of other artists. Night scenes -- and then Halloween scenes -- were always popular subjects. The more I painted them, the more they sold. And people loved them! Today, many of them live on mainly memory, as they have long since left my world.

Those were the years before the Internet, high quality scannign and digital giclee (high quality ink-jet) printing, and all the technology which we take for granted today, all of which made it possible to produce incredibly faithful reproductions in small quantities, and which also helped make my studio possible.

These days, my studio and its activities occupy a great deal of my creative time. I have come to think of myself as "Painter of Dark."

Thanks to the wonders of digital printing, I control every step of the reproduction of my paintings, from scanning through retouching, adjusting, tweaking, and watching each and every sheet as it inches from the giclee printer. I do everything "in house" guaranteeign that each print is completely faithful to my painting. The results I am able to achieve with today's state-of-the-art equipment, combined with finicky perfectionism, are simply amazing!
